The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office is asking for victims of a scheme targeting rural homeowners to come forward.

The department received multiple reports of an elder abuse scheme committed in both Marathon and Lincoln Counties over the past several months. It was reported that individuals, possibly operating under the company name of Marshall’s General Construction, had contacted homeowners to tell them their roofs or driveways needed repair.

The individuals would then spray the roof or driveway with a coating similar to the product Flex Seal, and then accept checks made out to Nick Costa, 42, or Alex Costa, 21, both of Illinois. Afterwards, homeowners discovered that the coating was ineffective or that no repair was needed in the first place.

Anyone who has had contact with these suspects or has been a victim of this scheme should call the Sheriff’s Office at 715-261-1200 or 911 to report. The Costas are currently scheduled in Marathon County Court on Oct. 3.
