EAGLE RIVER, WI (OnFocus) – The Eagle River Fire Department announced Monday that plans to construct the community ice castle this winter have been officially canceled following an assessment of ice conditions.
According to fire officials, crews measured ice thickness and evaluated surface conditions earlier in the day and determined the ice does not meet the safety standards required for construction. While a layer of surface slush had frozen, officials said the resulting ice was rough, uneven, and brittle.
To safely build the structure, crews would need to remove approximately one to two inches from the top of each ice block to reach solid ice. That process would require a minimum of 14 inches of ice. Current measurements show only 10.5 to 11 inches, which is not sufficient to proceed.
With warmer temperatures expected in the coming days, officials stated the necessary ice thickness is unlikely to develop this season.
The department expressed appreciation to the many volunteers, organizations, and community members who offered their time, equipment, and materials in preparation for the project. Officials said they look forward to attempting the ice castle again next winter if conditions allow.
Public safety remains the top priority, and residents are reminded to use caution when venturing onto area lakes as ice conditions can vary.
