STEVENS POINT — The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control wrapped up its June meeting with a slate of rule changes that will reshape several winter sports programs, headlined by the limited introduction of a shot clock in high school basketball beginning with the 2026–27 season.

Basketball: Shot Clock Coming, Tournament Adjustments Ahead

Starting next season, schools will be permitted to use a 35-second shot clock during nonconference varsity boys and girls basketball games, provided both teams agree. The change aligns with National Federation of State High School Associations rule adaptations. Full implementation across all games is on the table for 2028–29, though that step would require approval by the WIAA membership at the Annual Meeting next April.

The Board also approved adjustments to tournament enrollment cutlines for divisional placement across the five basketball divisions, effective with the 2027–28 season. Beginning next season, the higher-seeded team will wear white jerseys and be designated the home team in all State Tournament games.

Two regulations were eliminated as part of the basketball tournament procedure changes. One removed language that limited a player to only two halves when a one-half JV game preceded a two-half varsity game. The other dropped a provision that had prevented State Tournament teams from moving down to a smaller-school division the following year even if their enrollment would have placed them there.

Representatives from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, Luke Francois and Todd Fergot, appeared before the Board to present a proposal in support of expanding both the boys and girls State Basketball Tournaments. No action was taken on that proposal at the meeting.

Wrestling: Girls Team Tournament Details Finalized

The Board adopted the full structure for the new Girls Wrestling Team Tournament, which begins in 2026–27. Sixty-four teams will enter the tournament series, with the top two scoring teams from each individual regional advancing to the sectional team tournament. Teams will be seeded at sectionals using the Team Tournament seeding formula applied to their individual regional lineups, then advance to the State Team Tournament, which will run alongside the Boys Team Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 5–6 at the La Crosse Center.

The girls individual tournament also received a structural change. Sectional pairings will now follow an annual regional rotation that matches regional champions against regional runners-up in all weight classes, preventing athletes from the same two regionals from meeting in every sectional semifinal.

On the calendar side, dates for girls regionals and sectionals will move one week earlier in 2027, to Feb. 5 and Feb. 12, respectively. The Board also standardized the seeding process for both boys and girls individual and team tournament series, including clarifications on how current and prior State Tournament results factor into seeding and how wild card spots for the boys team tournament are determined.

Hockey: Longer Overtime, Four-Official System

The Board approved two changes to hockey tournament procedures. The overtime format now extends the process significantly. If a game remains tied after an eight-minute, five-on-five sudden victory period, the ice will be resurfaced before a 17-minute, five-on-five sudden victory overtime. If still no winner, the ice gets resurfaced again before a five-minute, four-on-four sudden victory period, with goalies switching ends. The second change requires a four-official system for all sectional and State Tournament games.

Conference Realignment Timeline Revised

Starting with the 2027–28 cycle, non-football conference realignment will shift to a four-year schedule. The football-only realignment cycle remains on its current two-year rotation. The Board also approved three fast-track realignment requests effective in 2026–27: Rhinelander moves from independent status into the Wisconsin Valley Conference for girls golf; Portage moves from independent status to the Badger Conference in girls golf, girls swimming and diving, and boys tennis; and Racine St. Catherine’s joins the Southeast Conference in girls golf.

The WIAA Board of Control’s next scheduled meeting will address the 2026–27 budget, among other items. Athletic directors new to the profession can also mark July 20 on their calendars for the New Athletic Directors’ Workshop.
