MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Fireworks were not the only thing making moves over the Independence Day weekend.
Early Sunday morning, July 5, Marshfield Police Department dispatchers received an unusual call: approximately 50 head of cattle had escaped and were loose along a county road southwest of town.
According to officials, the cattle are believed to have been loose for much of the night, with fireworks possibly contributing to the bovine breakout. Thankfully, the situation ended safely thanks to a team effort from local residents, farmers, a zookeeper and Marshfield police officers.
Zookeeper Kyle Kirk assisted at the scene, helping prevent the herd from entering nearby woods. Once the cattle were contained, the group helped escort them approximately 1.5 miles back to their farm.
No people or cattle were injured.
Marshfield Police later shared a lighthearted video set to music, giving the community a humorous look at what they called “The Great July 4th Bovine Breakout.” The department thanked everyone involved for helping “steer” the situation in the right direction.
While the call was certainly not routine, it turned into a memorable example of community teamwork, quick thinking and a little early-morning cardio.
