MEDFORD, WI (OnFocus) – Aspirus Medford Hospital has successfully achieved renewal of its Level IV Trauma Facility classification following a comprehensive onsite review by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS).

During the review, the state trauma team evaluated the hospital’s trauma care processes, documentation, staff training, and overall readiness to treat injured patients and its overall role in Wisconsin’s integrated trauma system.

“This designation reflects the exceptional commitment of our Emergency Department team to delivering high-quality care,” said Kari Rickert, RN, BSN, Trauma Program Manager at Aspirus Medford Hospital. “Achieving Level IV classification demonstrates our ability to provide timely, skilled stabilization and ensure patients receive the right level of care at the right time.”

The DHS review team specifically highlighted the strength of the Emergency Department’s leadership and recognized the consistent use of standardized checklists and clinical criteria. These practices support alignment not only within the department but across the broader Aspirus system.

“A Level IV Trauma designation means our community has immediate access to lifesaving care when every second counts,” said Jason Troxell, Aspirus Northwest WI Division President. “For rural communities, this designation is more than a label—it’s a lifeline. It ensures patients receive high-quality stabilization close to home and a seamless transfer to higher levels of care when needed.”

Wisconsin’s trauma system categorizes hospitals across four levels, recognizing the important role each facility plays in delivering timely and appropriate care. Level IV Trauma Care Facilities provide initial evaluation, stabilization, and advanced trauma life support before transferring patients to higher-level trauma centers when necessary.

The Level IV classification for Aspirus Medford Hospital is valid for three years.

“Our multidisciplinary team maintains ongoing trauma education and certifications to stay prepared for both adult and pediatric cases,” Rickert added. “This achievement underscores our dedication to continuous improvement and excellence in emergency care.”
