New data reveals which states are jumping into the Halloween spirit first

  • Nevadans are early planners with the highest Halloween shopping-related search activity per capita

  • Smaller states show big enthusiasm: Despite their size, states like New Hampshire and Delaware rank high for early Halloween shopping searches

  • Not every state is racing to get into the Halloween mood. Utah, Mississippi, and West Virginia rank at the bottom of the list.

A new study has identified the states where residents start shopping for Halloween the earliest, with Nevada taking the lead.

As Halloween approaches, some states waste no time diving into the spooky season, according to recent data.

The research team at online apparel shopping assistant Sizify analyzed more than 20K Halloween shopping-related search terms on Google Trends, such as ‘buy Halloween decorations,’ ‘buy Halloween costumes,’ ‘buy Halloween costumes for kids,’ and other similar phrases, to identify the U.S. states whose residents are most eager to get into the Halloween spirit.

In addition, the number of search terms for each state was gathered and calculated for 100K people.

Nevada tops the list for early Halloween enthusiasm. With over 32K Halloween shopping-related searches per 100K people, Nevadans are clearly not waiting until October 31st to get into the holiday spirit. Whether it’s about shopping to deck out their homes with spooky décor or hunting for the perfect costume, they’re way ahead of the game.

“Buy Halloween costumes” is the most-searched term in the state, suggesting that locals want to stand out at their Halloween parties. And with Las Vegas as a backdrop, it’s no wonder they’re aiming to be the most extravagant.

Coming in a close second is New Hampshire, with over 31K searches per 100K people. New Hampshire’s residents are showing major early enthusiasm for Halloween, with “buy Halloween decorations” ranking as the most popular search. It seems Granite Staters don’t mess around when it comes to prepping for the season, likely getting ready to outdo their neighbors with hauntingly impressive setups.

California, the most populous state in the country, unsurprisingly shows up high on the list with over 31K searches per 100K residents. Although the Golden State’s overall numbers are massive, regional differences may play a role, with cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco driving much of the early interest. The top search term here is “buy Halloween masks,” indicating many Californians are focused on locking down their costumes before the rush.

Kentucky is no slouch in the Halloween department either, ranking fourth with over 31K searches per 100K. “Buy Halloween party supplies” is the top search here, suggesting that Kentuckians are eager to throw epic parties for the holiday.

Illinois comes in fifth with over 30K searches per 100K people. The state’s residents are keen on getting the spooky vibes just right, as “buy Halloween decorations” is the most searched term. From urban Chicago to its rural stretches, Illinoisans seem committed to curating the perfect haunted atmosphere.

Even smaller states are getting in on the early Halloween action. Delaware, despite its size, racks up an impressive over 30K searches per 100K people. Their most searched term? “Buy Halloween pumpkins” — clearly, Delawareans are all about that pumpkin life.

Rhode Island, with over 30K searches per 100,000, is another small state that punches above its weight when it comes to Halloween enthusiasm. “Buy Halloween costumes for kids” is their most searched term, suggesting Rhode Islanders are making sure their little ones are all set for trick-or-treating.

Ohio, with 30,093 searches, sees its residents preparing for the sugar rush early. “Buy Halloween candy” is the top search term, as Ohioans gear up to satisfy trick-or-treaters’ sweet tooth.

Even Wyoming, the least populated state in the country, gets into the Halloween groove early, with 29,619 searches per 100,000 people. Leading the charge in Wyoming is the search for “buy Halloween props,” proving that even in sparsely populated areas, residents are keen on creating spooky setups.

Not every state is racing to get into the Halloween mood. Utah, Mississippi, and West Virginia lag behind, with significantly lower search volumes. While they may eventually join the festivities, these states seem content to take a more relaxed approach to the spooky season.
