Merrill (OnFocus) – Merrill’s Elizabeth Schmidt is a standout cross country and track performer for the Bluejays, and following her 1st place finish at sectionals, is headed to state with momentum.

Schmidt heads to The Ridges Golf Course on Saturday for state competition, and in her third trip to State, looks to wow Merrill fans.

“We have one athlete headed to state this year, Elizabeth Schmidt.  This will be her 3rd time going to State. Liz trains in the off season and comes into the season prepared to better herself,” shared Merrill Cross Country Coach and assistant track coach Alyssa Swan.

We caught up with Coach Swan to get some thoughts on Schmidt competing at State on Saturday:
How are you approaching practice this week as you prepare for the state meet?
We have decided to have a relaxing week.  800 repeats on Monday, hills on Tuesday, and a mix of short and long runs for Wednesday-Friday.
How has fan support been important for your team’s runners this year?
Great! First, our team is made up of the biggest supporters!  They support each other and are the best cheerleaders.  We’ve also had a lot of parents come and support us this year!

What do you see as the keys to be successful at The Ridges on Saturday?

Liz needs to get out fast and keep a nice, steady pace. (She’s really good at pacing herself!). We will also have our support system (Liz’s teammates) at the meet, so that should boost her performance!  We are excited to see how Liz’s last race will go!
