Fire Department Responds to Peach Ave. Structure Fire

Structure Fire Occurred Near Fire Station

A call came in at 11:24 a.m. Wednesday to report smoke coming from the basement windows of a residence at the corner of Peach Ave. and E. 5th Street, which is just down the street from the fire station.

“When they got on scene, they had heavy smoke that was coming from the basement,” said Fire Chief Scott Owen. “They called for a box alarm, got off duty personnel coming in to backfill the station and bring down here if we need them. They were able to subsequently extinguish the fire relatively quickly and now they’re in the process of what we call overhaul, checking for hot spots.”

The owner wasn’t home at the time. The fire will be investigated to determine the cause. There is no damage estimate at this time.
