WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (OnFocus) – After 16 years of dedicated service, Sergeant Dean Fleisner has officially retired from his role as a canine handler with the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department. His departure marks the end of a career deeply committed to public safety and the development of the department’s K9 program.

Sergeant Fleisner played a vital role in shaping the canine unit, which has grown from a single-dog operation to two fully functional teams. His retirement letter highlights a long list of colleagues, mentors, and organizations who supported him throughout his tenure. Among those acknowledged were retired Chief Heuer, who initiated the program, and current Chief Daniel Hostens, who helped expand it. Additional gratitude was extended to the Citizen Academy Alumni Association for their fundraising efforts and to trainers at K9 Services in New Mexico for their critical instruction.

Fleisner also recognized the challenges and rewards of the job, particularly the intense training period and community engagement involved. “Without community support, this program would not be where it is today,” he noted.

In a personal tribute, Sergeant Fleisner thanked his family for their support, especially his wife, who encouraged him to pursue the role despite the demands it placed on their time together.

As for his canine partner, Lex, Fleisner confirmed the dog is now retired as well and enjoying a well-earned rest with the family.

Sergeant Fleisner’s retirement leaves behind a legacy of commitment, growth, and community partnership in the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department’s canine unit.
