MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Staff at Wildwood Zoo are closely monitoring Malakai, the zoo’s 14-year-old gray wolf, after visitors were observed throwing objects and food into his exhibit on the same day, according to zoo officials.

In a statement posted to social media, the zoo reported that earlier in the day staff discovered a soft plastic ball had been thrown into the wolf enclosure. Malakai chewed on the object, prompting animal care staff to begin monitoring him for any signs of discomfort or complications.

Zoo officials said the majority of the toy was recovered, though a small piece remains unaccounted for. In a follow-up comment, staff said they believe the remaining piece should be able to pass safely, and that Malakai is expected to be okay.

Later that afternoon, around 4:00 p.m., staff observed a separate incident in which a visitor threw food into the wolf exhibit.

According to the zoo, Malakai receives a carefully planned daily diet designed to meet his nutritional needs and closely resemble what wolves eat in the wild. Human food, including fast food or homemade items, can be harmful and potentially dangerous to his health.

Zoo officials emphasized that while Malakai’s enclosure allows guests to see him easily from the driving path, that visibility comes with a responsibility to respect the animal’s safety and well-being.

“These types of incidents pose serious health risks to our animals,” the zoo stated, asking visitors to never throw objects or food into any exhibit.

In response to concerns from the public about Malakai living alone, zoo staff explained that due to his age, introducing another wolf would be extremely dangerous. They said he is well cared for, closely monitored, and provided with enrichment to support both his physical and mental well-being.

The zoo encouraged those who wish to support Malakai and other animals to consider donating approved enrichment or food items, noting that staff can provide guidance on appropriate donations.

Zoo officials thanked the public for their concern and support as they continue to monitor Malakai and reinforce visitor safety rules.
