MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – As spring blossoms throughout the zoo, another annual event is quietly unfolding: Canada goose nesting season. These familiar feathered residents are now in full parenting mode, and their natural protective instincts are stronger than ever.

Canada geese are known to become especially territorial during this time, often defending their nests and mates with vocal warnings, wing-flapping, or even short charges if they perceive a threat. While these behaviors are a normal part of their nesting routine, they can catch visitors by surprise.

To ensure a safe and peaceful environment for both guests and geese, zoo staff are encouraging visitors to follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Give geese plenty of space: Avoid approaching, feeding, or attempting to interact with them.
  • Stick to marked paths: Nesting areas are often located in grassy or secluded spots—help protect them by staying on walkways.
  • Keep calm around geese: Remind children to move quietly and refrain from running near goose families.

The zoo thanks all guests for their cooperation in keeping both wildlife and humans safe during this special season.
