From birthday candles to license plates, lucky numbers have always held a strange kind of power in American culture. Whether it’s personal superstitions, sentiment, or sheer habit, people across the U.S. gravitate toward certain digits they believe bring good fortune. But are these “lucky numbers” really all that lucky? (spoiler alert = no they aren’t)
The data study answers these questions by analyzing thousands worth of draw results from major U.S. number-based games over the past 10 years.

The Top 5 Luckiest Numbers and in Which State?
1: Number 10
Appearing 628 times, Number 10 is officially the luckiest number in America. It’s also the top pick in Florida and Louisiana, both states known for their vibrant lottery cultures. Some lottery fans online speculate that 10 is the “perfect number” round, simple, and symbolically complete. Numerologists also associate 10 with leadership and success, which may explain why it tops charts both spiritually and statistically.
2: Number 15
Also hitting 628 draws, Number 15 dominates Arkansas and North Dakota.
3: Number 1
Coming in at 626 appearances, Number 1 lives up to its name. It’s the top pick in Florida and Mississippi, both Southern states that share a love for scratch-offs and fast-play games. Number 1 is a common birthday pick but in many cultures, it’s also seen as a symbol of fresh starts and independence.
4: Number 38
With 609 appearances, Number 38 might not be top of mind for most players but maybe it should be. It doesn’t dominate any one state, but its consistent appearance across games gives it a mysterious allure.
5: Number 8
Just behind with 607 appearances, Number 8 has long been considered the luckiest number in Chinese culture, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. In the U.S., it’s the top pick in California, Texas, and Montana, a mix of big populations and big landscapes.

However, if you’re looking for inspiration on your next ticket, you might want to keep an eye on 10, 15, and 38, as they’ve proven to be some of the most commonly drawn across multiple games.
At the end of the day, lotteries are a game of chance, and players should always approach them for entertainment rather than expecting guaranteed wins. Whether you believe in lucky numbers or simply enjoy the thrill, this study offers a fun and fascinating look at America’s lottery trends.
Methodology
This study analyzed historical draw data from Powerball, Mega Millions, Cash4Life, Lotto America, and Lucky for Life. Data was collected from publicly available lottery results and includes draws up to 15 years old, with a minimum cut-off of one year. Results were normalized to compare frequency across different games and formats.
