TOWNSHIP OF CAMERON, WI (OnFocus) – Emergency crews responded to a hazardous materials situation Thursday afternoon after a propane truck began leaking at a private property off State Highway 10.
At approximately 1:35 p.m., the Wood County Communications Center dispatched the Township of Cameron Fire Department and the Town of Lincoln Fire Department to 9563 State Highway 10. Upon arrival, responders confirmed that while propane was leaking from the truck, there was no fire, the driver was uninjured, and the vehicle was off the roadway in a parking lot.
For public safety, authorities established a secure perimeter, cut electricity to the affected area, and evacuated nearby homes. Roads surrounding the incident site were also closed as a precautionary measure.
Several agencies provided additional support, including the Richfield Rural Fire Department, Hewitt Area Volunteer Fire Department, Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department, Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Wood County Emergency Management, Wood County Highway Department, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
“The cooperation among our county partners was instrumental in ensuring the safety of both the community and the firefighters operating in this hazardous environment,” said Fire Chief Aaron Andre of the Township of Cameron Fire Department in a statement posted to social media. “We are extremely grateful for their assistance.”
The cause of the propane leak remains under investigation. Officials have not released further details at this time.
Emergency responders credited the strong winds for quickly dissipating the propane’s odor, which is commonly described as a “rotten egg” smell due to added odorants for leak detection.
