Janice M. Schmitt of Marshfield, WI, Town of Lincoln, passed away on January 12, 2026. She was 78 years old.
Jan was born to parents Warren and Gladys (Quigley) Thompson on Nov. 11, 1947. She was born and raised in Duluth, MN and was a graduate of Central High School. She also obtained a degree in elementary education. Jan worked as a school teacher at Nasonville Elementary for many years.
When she wasn’t teaching, Jan often helped out on the family farm, sometimes driving the occasional tractor, feeding cows and chickens, collecting eggs, and caring for an ever-changing array of barn cats. She especially enjoyed her cat Otis.
In her spare time, Jan also enjoyed many hobbies and interests over the years including cooking and baking, gardening and growing flowers, crafting and quilting, and her many shopping trips spent with close girlfriends always on the lookout for the best quilt shops and fabric stores.
Jan was a quiet soul with a heart of gold. She is preceded in death by her parents Warren and Gladys Thompson, two siblings Gary and Duane Thompson, and most recently her beloved husband of 55 years, David W. Schmitt.
Jan is survived by her sister-in-law Amy (Dave Heckel), three stepchildren Scott (Jana), Kelly and Tammy, three step grandchildren Stephanie, Nicholas and Kristin, three step great grandchildren Kolton, Kashton and Knox, and extended family and dear friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Rembs Funeral Home in Marshfield, WI on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm to honor and commemorate the lives and love of both Janice M. and David W. Schmitt.
