MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – Marshfield High School’s Science Bowl team demonstrated their prowess in ocean sciences at the 2025 National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) Finals, held virtually via Zoom on May 17–18, 2025. Competing against the nation’s top regional champions, the team achieved a commendable fourth-place finish in the single-elimination, eight-team competition. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, was crowned the national champion.
The Marshfield team, composed of sophomores Cade Dahl and Prisha Varre, junior Neel Gonugunta, and seniors Kai Rens (team captain) and Ean Sautebin, advanced to the second round before their defeat. Under the guidance of coaches Paul Herder and Dean McFarlane, the team marked their 16th appearance at the NOSB National Finals over the past 23 years, a remarkable record that includes four national titles.
Marshfield secured their place at the nationals by winning the Lake Sturgeon Bowl Regional on February 1, 2025, at the UW–Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences. Hosted by the Center for Ocean Leadership at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), the NOSB Finals challenged students with buzzer-style questions, multiple-choice rounds, and team challenges, centered on this year’s theme, “Sounding the Depths: Understanding Ocean Acoustics,” which highlighted the significance of sound in marine conservation and research.
Coach Paul Herder shared the following remarks:
Marshfield High School has reconnected with its winning legacy, marking its first National Ocean Sciences Bowl NOSB appearance since 2018. This prestigious program offers a platform for bright young minds to showcase their prowess in ocean sciences, compete against peers, and explore future scholarship and career opportunities.
Seniors Kai Rens and Ean Sautebin have been steadfast team leaders for the past two years, inspiring their teammates and setting a high standard for excellence. Their legacy offers a strong foundation for the upcoming team members as they prepare to graduate. They will be missed!
The future of Marshfield’s team looks bright, with enthusiastic underclassmen and even middle school students eager to join next year’s squad. Marshfield’s NOSB future is indeed promising.
With 16 regional wins and several national titles, Marshfield High School’s program is a testament to dedication and hard work. This achievement highlights the school’s commitment to excellence and paves the way for future success.
As part of their regional victory, the team will wrap up their season with a four-day field trip beginning May 27, 2025, exploring southeastern Wisconsin’s diverse ecosystems. A key highlight is a day aboard the R/V Neeskay research vessel on Lake Michigan, where students will collaborate with scientists to collect and analyze freshwater samples. This hands-on experience aligns with the NOSB’s mission to foster the next generation of oceanographers, environmental leaders, and policymakers.
Marshfield High School’s enduring success, with 16 regional wins and multiple national titles, underscores the team’s dedication and sets the stage for future accomplishments as seniors Rens and Sautebin pass the torch to a promising new generation.
