STURGEON BAY, WI (OnFocus) – A 2-month-old kitten is recovering at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Door County Campus after surviving a fall from the Sturgeon Bay Bridge and being rescued from the waters below.
According to the Humane Society, drivers first spotted the kitten running back and forth across the busy bridge before it leapt over the side in an apparent attempt to escape traffic. Stephanie S., who witnessed the fall, quickly returned to the docks with her daughter to try to help.
Unable to reach the kitten, Stephanie flagged down nearby boaters. Melissa L. and her husband responded and maneuvered their boat to where the animal was struggling in the water. They successfully pulled the kitten aboard and brought her to shore, where Stephanie’s daughter wrapped her in a sweatshirt to keep her warm.
The family named the kitten “Splash” and cared for her overnight, giving her a bath, food, and rest. The next day, they brought her to the Humane Society’s Door County Campus for an examination.
Veterinarians found that Splash had only a mild upper respiratory infection and no broken bones or signs of aspiration pneumonia. Staff reported that she is resting comfortably and expected to make a full recovery.
The Wisconsin Humane Society praised the quick actions of the rescuers, noting that Melissa and her husband had only planned to take a “last boat ride of the season” before becoming unexpected first responders.
