WAUSAU, WI (OnFocus) – A 26-year-old male inmate at the Marathon County Jail has died following a suicide attempt that occurred on June 1, 2025. He was transported to a local hospital and remained under medical care until his death on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, the individual’s name is not being released.

The incident occurred Sunday evening when fellow inmates alerted correctional staff to an unresponsive individual in one of the housing units. Staff responded immediately and found the 26-year-old inmate in the process of attempting suicide. Emergency medical services were requested, and personnel from the Wausau Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter to provide on-site care before transporting him to a local hospital.

The individual was booked into the Marathon County Jail on February 2, 2025, and was in custody on a probation hold. He was housed in a general population unit, where he had access to and had previously engaged with mental health resources.

As part of routine procedures, correctional staff conduct hourly checks on all individuals in general population housing units. In the hour before the incident, the inmate was observed or had contact with staff on four separate occasions during routine rounds and scheduled duties within the unit.

Several inmates assisted correctional staff during the response. We extend our sincere gratitude to those individuals for their alertness, compassion, and assistance during this extremely difficult situation.

All in-custody deaths are subject to a comprehensive review and/or investigation by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, an outside law enforcement agency, and the Marathon County Medical Examiner’s Office.
