CENTRAL WI, WI (OnFocus) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory affecting numerous counties across the state due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke.

The advisory is in effect from noon Wednesday until 3:00pm Thursday, with air quality expected to reach unhealthy levels (Red category). Periods of very unhealthy conditions (Purple category) are also possible as dense smoke moves through the state behind a cold front.

Affected Counties: Adams, Buffalo, Clark, Crawford, Grant, Jackson, Juneau, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Taylor, Trempealeau, and Vernon.

Smoke Progression Timeline:

  • La Crosse to Rhinelander: around noon Wednesday
  • Platteville to Iron Mountain, MI: by 6 PM Wednesday
  • Janesville to Sheboygan: around midnight Wednesday night
  • Kenosha: by 6 AM Thursday

Clearing expected in northwest Wisconsin around midnight Thursday

Health Recommendations:

  • Sensitive groups (including children, older adults, and those with respiratory or heart conditions) should limit outdoor activity and stay indoors if symptoms occur.
  • Individuals with asthma should follow their asthma action plans and have quick-relief medication on hand.
  • People with heart disease experiencing palpitations, shortness of breath, or fatigue should contact a healthcare provider.
  • General public is advised to keep outdoor activities brief and less intense.

The situation will be reassessed on Wednesday morning, and updates will be provided as necessary.
