(OnFocus) The Wood County Sheriff’s Department gave back this week to two local cancer centers with the proceeds from its breast cancer fundraiser.

The department donated $500 to the Marshfield Clinic Oncology Department and $500 to the Aspirus UW Cancer Center’s Patient Fund. The funds were raised last fall through the sale of 250 breast cancer shoulder patches and 100 pins.

Inspired by the breast cancer and autism awareness patches sold by the Marshfield Police Department, Sheriff Shawn Becker spearheaded an internal department fundraiser with pink patches last summer for Sergeant Nate Dean and his wife Kristen as she battled breast cancer.

“The response from our department was so strong that we thought we could do more,” said Captain Quentin Ellis.

Starting in September, the sheriff’s department expanded the fundraiser to the public and added pins as another option. The majority of the supplies were sold out by the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

“The community support was outstanding,” said Ellis.

Meeting the oncology team responsible for helping Sergeant Nate Dean and his wife Kristen through their ongoing breast cancer battle was a “humbling” experience.

“It was great to give back to that team of people that took care of one of our team,” he said.

A few pins are still available for sale at $5 each. Message the department’s Facebook page or email Sheriff Becker at [email protected] to order one. Proceeds from the remaining sales will be set aside for next year or else put toward another good cause.
