Wisconsin’s Statewide Mask Mandate Will Continue

OnFocus – Gov. Tony Evers’ mask mandate will continue, after the Wisconsin State Assembly chose not to take up a resolution that would have repealed the mandate. The vote was expected to take place today.

This comes two days after the State Senate approved the resolution. (The Legislature can overturn emergency orders without the governor’s signature, which means that a vote to repeal the mandate would have been final.)

The reasoning behind upholding the mask mandate was fear of losing additional state funding under a COVID-19 package Congress passed last year. States received funding for food stamps if they had emergency health orders in place.

The mandate was first implemented in August and extended two separate times. It is currently scheduled to be in place until March 20.

There are currently just nine states without a statewide mask mandate. Some counties and municipalities have also passed mask mandates that are implemented locally. These would have been upheld regardless of today’s vote.
