WIAA Board of Control Sept Meeting: Addressing Official Shortage and Recruitment; COVID Guidelines; Area Meetings Reports

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control received reports on a number of membership-related items, including an update of COVID-19 guideline considerations at its September meeting today.

The Board discussed reimplementing use of the System Checklist & Verification Form for the Tournament Series but did not take action. With guidance by the Sports Medical Advisory Committee and executive staff, the current guidelines will remain in place. While there are no immediate plans to make major changes to the Tournament Series structure, there continues to be discussions for COVID-19 accommodations at tournament events.

2021 Fall Sports Season Schedules

In other pandemic-related items, the Board and executive staff extended its support of an ongoing study being conducted by Dr. Tim McGuine titled “The Continued Assessment of the Health of Student-Athletes During the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

The executive staff presented the Board with reports on the Area Meetings in Appleton, Greenfield and Mauston, which are the first three of seven meetings around the state this fall. In addition, the Board was provided an update on a  sports officials harassment bill, efforts for the recruitment and retention of WIAA-licensed officials, and plans for the 2021 Sportsmanship Summit scheduled Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Holiday Inn & Convention Center in Stevens Point, Wis. Other topics presented in the executive staff reports to the Board were the ongoing social media, marketing and office technology efforts.

The Board approved the 2021-22 WIAA Executive Staff Handbook and the WIAA Employee Handbook and the rescheduling of the Board meeting from Friday, March 4 to Tuesday, March 8 at the WIAA office.

The Board received liaison reports from John Ashley of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and Shawn Groshek of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.
