MADISON, Wis. – Colder weather has arrived, but the change in seasons doesn’t mean an end to outdoor opportunities. The latest issue of Wisconsin Natural Resources magazine is now available and serves as a reminder that there are plenty of beautiful state parks, forests and more to explore in winter.

The magazine cover story, “Winter Walks,” highlights several state properties around Wisconsin that are perfect for winter hiking and snowshoeing. From Lake Superior to Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River, you can bundle up and head out to find your seasonal adventures.

For those who might prefer looking ahead to spring, the latest issue features a story on planning now to add native plants to brighten your garden and benefit wildlife, with lists of specific plants to consider.

A story by Wisconsin author James Edward Mills recounts a Black Men Northwoods Retreat he led in fall to the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Another story tells how outdoor all-terrain wheelchairs from the nonprofit group Access Ability Wisconsin offer opportunities for those with mobility issues to get outdoors.

Beautiful photography is emphasized in two other magazine pieces, one paying tribute to a beautiful bur oak in Grant County felled by a summer windstorm, and the other featuring seasonal photos from — appropriately — Winter, Wisconsin.

A new “Travel Resources” feature from the Department of Tourism’s Office of Outdoor Recreation highlights winter fun in the state. Other regular features include “Your Outdoors,” “Back in the Day,” “Readers Write” and DNR Secretary Preston D. Cole’s regular quarterly message, emphasizing the importance of making Wisconsin’s great outdoors available to everyone.
