WAUSAU, WI UPSET CITY – SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS

SPORTSDESK – In the first upset of the day, it was the #8 seed Newman Catholic Cardinals downing the #1 seed Almond-Bancroft Eagles, 10-9. Not to be outdone, the #9 seed Wausau West Warriors roughed up the #8 seed Eau Claire North Huskies, 10-2. Both teams advancing with road wins to start the 2019 WIAA softball playoffs.

On Thursday, Newman Catholic dispensed of #9 seed Marion in five innings, 11-1. The Cardinals then used that momentum on Tuesday at Almond-Bancroft. Newman will now travel to Marshfield on Thursday, May 23rd to take on a familiar foe in Columbus Catholic. The Dons easily downed Northland Lutheran on Tuesday, 11-1. Wausau West jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and didn’t look back. Shaeylyn Talley led the way with two for four hitting and three RBI. Robyn Kirsch knocked in two and scored twice for the Warriors. Abby Schilling struck out nine over seven innings to keep the Huskies kenneled all day. West will now play Wisconsin Valley Conference foe, SPASH, on Thursday, May 23rd at 5pm at Woyak fields in Plover, WI. Highlights will be on Facebook at Zaleski Sports Stevens Point.
