Wausau West’s Colton Geurink Voted Athlete of the Week, August 15 – 21

Wausau (OnFocus) – Voting for Athlete and Team of the Week returned, and voters turned out in solid numbers to support local athletes and their accomplishments. For the first voting of the 2021-22 schoolyear, a solid turnout by voters saw each athlete getting at least 130 votes, which is quite impressive.

For Week 1, Colton Geurink of Wausau West was the top vote-getter, collecting 552 votes. Second place went to Andrew Jeske of Colby, who collected 319 votes.

  • Brock Birrenkott, Pacelli: 152 votes
  • Brock Bennington, Spencer/Columbus: 139 votes

  • Brodk Birrenkott, Pacelli – In Pacelli’s 33-7 win over Weyauwega-Fremont, Birrenkott spearheaded the charge on defense, collecting 10 solo tackles and assisting on 6 others.
  • Colton Geurink, Wausau West Football – Geurink put the state on notice that he’s ready to amass big numbers on the ground, collecting 297 rushing yards on 38 carries and scored 5 touchdowns as the Warriors downed DePere 38-14 to open the season.
  • Dillon Kirsch, Stratford Football (nominated online) – In Stratford’s 14-7 battle with Mosinee, Kirsch scored the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute left to play in the game.
  • Brock Bennington, Spencer/Columbus Football – Bennington had 236 yards rushing on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns in the Rockets’ 51-28 win over Glenwood City.
  • Andrew Jeske, Colby Football (nominated online) – In Colby’s 37-0 blanking of Neillsville/Granton, Jeske was instrumental in the Hornets’ swarming defense. Colby limited N/G to -23 yards rushing and Jeske produced a rarity for a defensive player, a safety. Jeske also racked up 4 sacks, putting Colby’s opponents this season on notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with.
