Volleyball Rules Change for 2021: Religious Headwear Permitted Without State Association Approval

The National Federation of State High School Association has announced rules changes for the 2021 season.

The NFHS Volleyball Rules Committee recommended three rules changes at its January 10-12 virtual meeting, all approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

 Volleyball Rules Changes for 2021

  • Amended Rule 4-1-6: Head coverings worn for religious reasons are NOT CONSIDERED HAIR DEVICES and do not require state association approval to be worn. (Must be made of non-abrasive or soft material and fit securely.)
    • Note: Head coverings worn for medical reasons still require state association approval.
  • in Rule 7-1-4 for a late submission of a lineup was LESSENED, same as penalty for a late roster.
  • Rule 5-3-1a allows for officials to wear: WHITE / BLUE / GRAY collared shirt, as determined by state association.
