MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) Recent UWSP Alumna Shelley Gabel continues to use the skills she developed during her undergraduate career to make a difference.

Gabel chose the university because of the great science curriculum and faculty, which results in many students who are accepted to medical school upon graduation. It was also close to her hometown of Marshfield.

During her time at UWSP from 2012-16, the Biochemistry major participated in the National Society for Leadership and Success, acting as Community Service Chair and President of the chapter.

“Through these roles, I helped to facilitate involvement in the United Way Rake-A-Thon and helped to facilitate a relationship between members of the club and the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program,” she said.

Because of the professional communication skills and confidence gained from those experiences, Gabel reached out to local service groups and worked on a community project with The Hannah Center, a woman’s crisis center based in Marshfield.

“I helped their director, Tricia, try and improve programs for their residents by developing a satisfaction survey that they could use to get feedback from past and future residents to help improve their programs and implement new programs,” said Gabel. “I hope to work with Tricia in the future to help raise community support and awareness of the Hannah Center, and help them to get transitional housing set up.”

Gabel started medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin after graduation and plans to further make use of the skills she learned during undergrad in her everyday work.

“In the future, I know that creating relationships between service groups and my professional community will be important to me and will help me and my colleagues to make a difference in our community, both inside and outside the walls of the hospital.”
