Tornado Given Preliminary EF3 Rating

The tornado that touched down in Wheaton near Elk Mound Tuesday evening has been given a preliminary EF3 rating. Tornadoes of this size have wind speeds between 136 to 165 mph.

The tornado touched down shortly before 8 p.m. as severe storms ripped through western Wisconsin, damaging homes and other structures near the Chippewa-Dunn county line. At least three semi-trailers overturned along Wisconsin Highway 29.

Chippewa County Emergency Management said that adults wishing to volunteer for debris cleanup should report to the Wheaton Fire Station at 3900 38th Street, Elk Mount between 9-10 a.m. on Thursday.
