AUGUSTA, WI (OnFocus) – Bryce and I took advantage of a Sunday drive last week. The mid 70’s temperature called for an excellent day to take a Sunday drive. Instead of running the Dodge Ram north this time, we decided to head west.

I took Bryce over to the Rock Dam area, showing him where I used to do some of my turkey hunting. I have not bounced around on those sandy single-track trails in years. From its looks, though, the roads have improved, and many more have been added over the years.

On this day, we had driven down roads that I  didn’t even know where we were going to end up. I said to Bryce, “you even had any idea where we were at” I knew he didn’t have a clue, but it put a grin on his face.

Dewey

Dewey was our backseat passenger for the day; he didn’t have a care in the world as he stretched out and enjoyed taking in all the new smells. Dewey recently has come into my life being a city-dwelling dog for almost 13 years; he has come to appreciate some of the country boy lifestyles I lead. His road trip would wear him out to ensure he would have a long deep sleep for the evening. Angie always appreciates it when he has nights like that.

As we traveled around the backroads, I told Bryce that I wanted to take him to a memorial I had been to years ago. It was for a firefighter that had lost his life while fighting a forest fire. I explained to him how I remember it being a real rough road back to this canoe landing area.

We eventually found a bridge where we watched two gentlemen cast their fly rods as we drove along. I had hoped to see them catch smallmouth bass, but when we paused to watch them, nothing had taken their presentation.

As I watched them, I was envious of their casting ability. Whenever I see a fly fisherman, my thoughts go to a favorite movie; A River Runs Through It. That movie I have watched so many times in my life and someday hope to fish the trout streams of Montana.

Soon we came upon the memorial, Donald L Eisberner Memorial Forest & Canoe Landing; the road going into the canoe landing had significantly improved from almost 20 years ago when I was there. When you visit the website on the memorial, there is a disclosure that Chaney Road is unpaved and seasonal conditions vary widely.

We got out to listen to the North Fork of the Eau Claire River. We watched and listened to Dewey lap up water from the River; I said to Bryce, “we need to plan a kayak trip here!” He agreed that this would be a neat area to explore more.

Our day had us end up in Osseo as we did a drive-through meal at Taco John’s; Dewey is a fan of the potato ole. After he helped me finish off a large cup of them, he was back to sleep as we headed back home for the day.

It’s been a long time since I have just jumped in a vehicle and drove with no real

destination in mind. The goal that day was to hang out with Bryce and do some sightseeing; the bonus was that we found a future adventure destination where we would be floating the North Fork of the Eau Claire River.

In closing, I hope you find a way to get into the outdoors, create your adventure and memories, but most importantly, find a way to “Celebrate the Experience.” Go check out www.thankfuloutdoors.com for more content and share your “Celebrate the Experience” moment with us!
