John and Gladys Olsen Celebrate 74 Years of Marriage

MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – John, age 95, and Gladys, age 93, said “I do” 74 years ago after meeting at Loyal School in Loyal, WI, where Gladys was the librarian and John worked as a mechanical engineer. On August 16, John and Gladys Olsen’s 74th wedding anniversary, they celebrated their long, happy union with family and friends at Stoney River assisted living in Marshfield, WI.

It’s a milestone that few married couples reach, with about seven percent of spouses making it 50 years and less than one percent making it 70 years, according to census reports.

When asked their secret to a long marriage, John and Gladys both say they never go to bed angry. In fact, the couple share a sweet, nightly ritual that keeps them in sync with each other.

“We always go to bed at the same time and pray The Lord’s Prayer together,” John said. “You have to give, share and take,” Gladys added.

John and Gladys, who raised four children and have 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, recently moved to Stoney River in July and are already fitting in nicely.

“They are a beautiful couple inside and out,” said Sarah Krenn, Stoney River’s Executive Director, who supplied a decorated anniversary cake for the couple’s celebration with family and their new Stoney River friends.
