MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – A heartwarming reunion took place this week at the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter (MAPS) as a small, 11-year-old dog named Gracie found her way back home. Gracie arrived at MAPS in dire straits last week, her story shrouded in mystery.
Gracie’s journey to MAPS began when she was discovered running along a country road in the pouring rain. Good Samaritans who spotted her knew she needed immediate help and brought her to MAPS. The petite 6-pound dog was in rough shape, with severely matted fur, overgrown nails, and a hind end covered in mats and feces.
With swift and compassionate care, the dedicated team at MAPS set to work. Gracie was cleaned up as best as possible before being referred to their trusted partners at Castlerock Veterinary Hospital. There, veterinarians and staff had to sedate her to carefully remove the layers of matted fur on her feet and body. Gracie then began her recovery under the loving care of the shelter’s staff.
“We named her Gracie,” said Karen Rau, Executive Director at MAPS. “She had a microchip, but unfortunately, the information wasn’t up to date, leaving us with no clue about her past. What we do know is that she desperately needed our help.”
The community rallied around Gracie, offering support and donations for her ongoing care.
Then, Gracie’s story took an unexpected turn when her microchip revealed that her real name was Bella, and she had been stolen from her home in the Chicago area in August 2021. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Lisa, a volunteer with Microchip Hunters, Bella’s owner, Ebony, was located and contacted.
“We have a happy ending to Gracie’s story,” Rau shared. “Bella is now reunited with her very grateful mom, thanks to the good Samaritans who found her, the Microchip Hunters team, and her microchip!”
Bella’s journey from a lost and mistreated dog to a beloved member of her family once again highlights the importance of microchipping and never giving up hope. While Bella’s ordeal was a trying one, her story serves as a testament to the power of community and perseverance.
