Spencer School District Proposes 4-Day In-Person Teaching

Spencer (OnFocus) – At Monday’s meeting, Spencer School District finalized plans for the 2020-2021 school year.

School Board President, Tom Schafer, made opening remarks that acknowledged that this process has not been easy for the students, the teaching staff, and the parents.

The school board meeting was set for Monday at 4:30 pm. Full agenda here.

Over 20 community members were presented at the meeting.

John Dunbar, a parent, during open comment said, “Six parents contacted me that they were not able to attend the meeting based on the scheduling time of the meeting.”

Many parents addressed the need for the school to be open 5 days a week, as well as the social and mental health of the students.

Mike Endreas, District Administrator, said, “It was very evident in our parent survey that a large number of parents prefer to have their child back in school. We have to balance the needs of all kids.”

Mike Endreas presented the proposed reopening plan. The plan consisted of three tiers. The tiers are based off the activity level in the region set by the Wisconsin Department of Health. The information is updated every Wednesday at 2 pm.

As of today only one county in the state is in the low activity level and 13 counties are in the medium activity. Marathon County as of Wednesday, June 22nd is listed in the high activity level.

Jason Gorst said, “What we are trying to do right now is to have multiple tiers, with the ultimate goal is to have the kids in school as much as possible. Whatever is decided tonight, we ask that you continue to be flexible.”
