A special election will take place May 12, 2020 for the open seat left by Sean Duffy.

Nomination papers are due on Dec. 2 and the special primary will occur on Feb. 18, the same day as the spring primary.

Gov. Tony Evers said he would sign a bill that would reimburse counties and municipalities for certain costs incurred for special elections and primaries for state or national office. The Senate passed the bill earlier this month.

Originally the special election was scheduled for Jan. 27 and the primary on Dec. 30. However, this was in violation of federal law, which requires a 45 day gap between the two dates, versus Wisconsin state law, which requires just 28 days.

In a statement Friday, Evers also called on the legislature to bring Wisconsin’s special election law into compliance with federal law.

Republican U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy announced in August that he would be resigning to spend more time with his family after learning his ninth child would be born with a heart condition. His daughter, Valentina, was born Oct. 8 with Down Syndrome and two holes in her heart that will require surgery.
