PITTSVILLE, WI – The Snyder 4-H Club building, located at 4290 State Highway 73 N, was destroyed overnight in a fire. The Snyder School was a one-room country school house until 1959. It now serves as the club headquarters.

The club wrote on social media: “Good morning Snyder 4-H…I have some sad news to report. During the night there was a fire in the clubhouse. The building is a total loss. We don’t know all the details yet. Snyder was home to several generations of 4-H’ers and was home to many memories. We will share more information as soon as we know more.”

Marilyn Cournoyer, Treasurer of the Snyder 4-H building/food stand committee has been affiliated with the club for over 37 years and said the club is devastated about the incident.

“There were trophies, there were record books and all this stuff in the back area of the clubhouse,” Cournoyer said. “They went in and took out what they could from the main entrance and they went in and cut a hole on the east side of the building and collected as much as they could.”

According to Cournoyer, crews arrived on-scene around 1:15 a.m.

Cournoyer said the building had a fire five years ago and it was believed to be an arson case. This fire appeared to have started in the back storage area and spread to the main building. Crews are still on-scene as they attempt to extinguish the fire and determine the cause of the fire.

Crews went into the fire and saved as much memorabilia and historical items before the building was completely taken by the fire.

Cournoyer said the club needs to meet in the next couple of weeks to determine the next step for the club. She said when she got the call that the 4-H building was on fire, she never expected it to be a total loss.

“When my son called me, he said, ‘Well mom, there’s a fire at Snyder 4-H,'” Cournoyer said. “When I got there, the whole thing was demolished. But nobody got hurt so that’s a good thing.”

More details will be released as they become available.
