LEDs have a much longer lifespan and use 90% less electricity than incandescent bulbs, which use most of their electricity for heat and just 10% for producing light. In contrast, LEDs create little to no heat, reducing the risk of fire, and reduce carbon emissions, said James Benson, Energy & Water Conservation Coordinator.
Holiday lights using LED bulbs can take a lot more abuse and withstand extreme conditions – an advantage for the plunging Wisconsin temperatures in winter. With LEDs, gone are the days of searching for a single burnt out bulb or dealing with bulbs that blink on and off. Today, there are many decorating options using LEDs including traditional looking styles.
LED is also an ideal option inside the home. Homeowners should check the color output on the packaging: a Bright White is nice for a basement or garage, Soft White for reading, and Cool White for kitchen and bathroom. Most sellers will have a chart available to help pick the right product.
