Longtime Co-op Support Phil Hein Passed Away This Week

OnFocus – ProVision Partners Cooperative paid tribute to longtime supporter and advocate Philip “Phil” Hein this week. Hein passed away peacefully at his home on February 20.

A lifelong dairy farmer, Hein was recently interviewed for a video project related to ProVision Partners. To honor Hein’s memory, ProVision commissioned a special tribute featuring tidbits from his interview.

“Phil was a dedicated advocate of the cooperative system in general and was always a strong supporter of our coop throughout his lifetime in farming and we will miss him and stories he shared!” said Dawn Beihoffer, ProVision Partners.

Stratford – Philip J. Hein, 92, Stratford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at his home in the Town of Eau Pleine.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 26, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stratford, where a rosary service will be at 10:30 am. Rev. Sengole Vethanayagam will officiate. Sauter / Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family and the service will be live streamed at www.facebook.com/rembsfuneralhomes. Burial will be in the parish cemetery and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be determined.

Philip was born on June 1, 1928 in Milwaukee. His parents were Philip and Catherine (Ferrier) Hein. He was a 1946 graduate of Stratford High School and a 1948 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course. He married Lucille E. Scheuer on June 10, 1950 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Marshfield.

Phil was a Lifelong dairy farmer of Stratford, owner of the Philip Hein Farm, which became Hein’s Farm Inc. with son, Ken, and then Maple Ridge Dairy which was owned by Philip, son Ken, and son-in-law Gary Ruegsegger. Phil was very passionate about life, with family, farming and his love for cooperatives leading the way. He was quoted as saying “Tough times don’t last…Tough people do” which has continued to be a family motto. During his lifetime, he served many cooperatives by being on the board of directors and after by being active at their annual meetings as a member. A special thanks to Provision Partners for including him at their annual meetings and listening to his advice through his 92nd year of life. Listed below are many of the organizations that he was involved in and a few may have been missed. They included Provision Partners, St. Paul Bank for Cooperatives, CoBanK, National Bank for Cooperatives, 21st Century Genetics, Morning Glory Farms Cooperative, Stratford Farmers Cooperative, Harmony Cooperative, Colby, WI, Marshfield Farmers Cooperative, Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association, Production Credit Association of Wausau, Federal Land Bank Association of Wausau, Marathon County DHIA, Wisconsin Dairy Herd Improvement Association, Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives, Farm Credit Banks of St. Paul, Marathon County DHIA, Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives of which he received the Cooperative Builders Award in 1984. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin Agriculture and Life Sciences in 1976. Philip was member of St Joseph’s Parish in Stratford for 92 years and was proud to have served on the parish council and sang in the choir.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lu, and their ten children, David Hein (Chad Froming), Ouray, CO, Donna (Doug) Erickson, Chippewa Falls, WI, Diane (Dave) Scheunemann, Marshfield, WI, Daniel Hein (Cathy), Appleton, WI, Kenneth Hein (Becky), Stratford, WI, Janet (Pat) Stolt, Beaverton, OR,Mary Hein (Gary Ruegsegger), Marshfield, WI, Timothy Hein (Grace), Tomah, WI, Thomas Hein, Stratford, WI, and Kerry (Keith) Burnside, Fall Creek. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Ryan Hein (Tim), Brittni (Jeriod) Dahm, Tanner Erickson, Brett Scheunemann and Jessica, Keith (Micki) Scheunemann, Leah (Jeff) Houghton, Lexie Hein, Jenna (Jon) Yasgur, Sarah Hein, Colleen (Andrew) Holden, Ben (Rachel) Stolt, Matthew Stolt and Maddie, Analise (Ben) Hanneman, Nicole (Shawn) Wilson, Kian Hein, Kati Hein, Alex Hein, Sedona Burnside, Kyle Burnside and Katrina and by 11 great grandchildren. He is further survived by a sister Monica (Clem) Folz, Schofield, WI and in-laws, Marge Oppman, Florence Lindow, Bob Scheuer, Carol Schultz, Shirley Mounce, Joyce (John) Kilty and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by recently found biological brother, Tom Newman, Necedah, WI. and sister, Marjorie Zdun, Pittsville, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary Johnette at birth, and special cousin-brother Denis Hein, brothers-in law George Oppman, Dick Scheuer, Merlie Lindow and Fritz Schultz.
