Where to Test for CWD

Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) This hunting season, have a plan to dispose of deer carcass waste by taking advantage of numerous drop-off sites available locally.

By not discarding waste in woods and fields, hunters can help reduce the risk for the transmission of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). According to the Wisconsin DNR, contact between deer can lead to the spread of CWD, as can exposure to an area where a CWD-positive carcass has decomposed.

To limit this infection risk, carcasses should be disposed of in a way that will limit the spread of CWD. In Wisconsin, it’s illegal for hunters to dispose of deer waste on public lands and roadways, or on private land without permission.

Hunters have a variety of free dumpster locations to choose from that are offered through the Wisconsin DNR, with two additional spots in Marshfield sponsored by Whitetails Unlimited.

Locally, these two drop-off locations can be found on the corner of Hume Ave. and 4th St. in Marshfield and Lindsey Bar & Grill on County Road V. Hunters can also donate their deer hide at these locations. An additional dumpster location is set up by the DNR at Mead Wildlife Area.

“We started doing this because we were seeing so much waste thrown along the road,” said Marlin Laidlaw, longtime board member at Whitetails Unlimited and an official measurer for the Wisconsin Buck & Bear Club.

He encourages hunters not to take any extra chances and to do their part to prevent the spread of disease.

Hunters can get their carcass tested for CWD at J&S Processing on County Road V in Marshfield and Headings Family Meats on County Road C in Spencer, or else at the self-service kiosk at the Richfield Town Hall on Richfield Drive.

“That’s a pretty easy method to get that test done and to be assured their animal is not infected with CWD,” Laidlaw said.
