Prentice Outlasts Abbotsford in Overtime

Abbotsford (OnFocus) – It took an extra four minutes before the Prentice Buccaneers were able to pick up a thrilling 73-68 Marawood Conference win over the Abbotsford Falcons.

Abbotsford was on fire in the early going, connecting with three pointers from Alea Graff, Bridgett Pogodzinski and Sydney Falteisek on Abby’s first three possessions.

The Falcons took a 15-8 led with 12 minutes remaining on a basket from Pogodzinski before the Bucs fought back. Abby held a 28-24 advantage until the final seconds of the first half before the Bucs’ Kiandra Hartmann drained another three pointer. Hartmann led all scorers with 33 points, making good on six three pointers.

Prentice built a second half lead of eight points, at 54-46, with just over five minutes remaining. Abbotsford needed to dig deep to come back, and they did just that.

Abbotsford senior Catie Clement scored on a fantastic spinning move in the paint with three minutes to go and the lead was reduced to 54-51.

Buckets from freshman Briseida Escalera and Mya Ruesch had the lead down to two, 57-55, with just over a minute to go. The comeback was on, and Abbotsford wasn’t finished.

A pair of Bucs’ free throws with 46 seconds left gave the visitors a 61-57 lead, only to see Ruesch and Escalera net baskets in the paint to force overtime.

Prentice held a 12-7 advantage in the extra period to pick up the win.

Ruesch led Abbotsford with 17 points. Falteisek added 12 points and Escalera scored 10 points.

Serena Moore added 14 points for Prentice.
