Police: Threat Involving Nekoosa Schools Not ‘Legitimate’

The Nekoosa Police Department say a social media threat which caused Nekoosa public schools to be cancelled on Friday was not legitimate.

In a release, the department said the originator of the threat to the school district on Dec. 5 was a juvenile living in Michigan.

“It appears that that local connection was random and there was never a legitimate threat to any area school district. The treat was communicated through the YOLO social media platform which creates an anonymous profile linked to the Snapchat social media platform.”

Police started investigating at 10:30 p.m. Thursday and identified the person of interest at 9 a.m. the following morning with assistance from the Okemos, Michigan police department.

No specific information involving weapons, methods, or individuals was mentioned in the threat, but it was taken seriously by law enforcement. Criminal action will proceed through the Wood County District Attorney.

“The Nekoosa Police Department is determined to hold anyone accountable for threats against our schools and community,” the department stated. “We are committed to partner with the Nekoosa School District to provide a safe learning and work environment for students and staff. The Nekoosa School District has been cleared to resume normal school operations.”

School will resume on Monday.
