Marshfield Police Department has been fielding many calls related to hosting garage sales this spring.

“We understand that while many are at home, you have been productive and may be taking part in spring cleaning activities,” said the department in a post. “Although we appreciate and support this, we have also fielded many calls asking if rummage or garage sales are allowed. The short answer is ‘no,’ the longer answer with possible ramifications is below…we are seeking voluntary compliance but will enforce this order when it is intentionally violated.”

The post stated that until Governor Evers social distancing order is lifted, rummage, garage, and estate sales in the City of Marshfield are prohibited.

The Governor’s order states: “All individuals present within the State of Wisconsin are ordered to stay at home or at their place of residence, with exceptions outlined below. To the extent individuals are using shared or outdoor spaces other than their home or residence, they must at all times as reasonably possible maintain social distancing of at least six (6) feet from any other person consistent with Social Distancing Requirements as defined below, except that they do not need to maintain social distancing between family members in a single living unit or household members.”

Those who violate this order may face the following: “Any person who willfully violates or obstructs the execution of any state statute or rule, county, city or village ordinance or departmental order under this chapter and relating to the public health, for which no other penalty is prescribed, shall be imprisoned for not more than 30 days or fined not more than $500 or both.”
