Obituary for Roger R. Serchen

Roger R. Serchen, 92 of Marshfield passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2021, due to age and complications from COVID 19.

Roger Ralph Serchen was born February 19, 1928, in Marshfield, WI to Adolf and Bertha (Hauser) Serchen. He attended elementary and high school in Marshfield and graduated in 1948.  In high school he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball., he was also a member of the national guards. After graduation, he worked construction and in 1950 enlisted in the US army.  He did his basic training at Fort Riley in Kansas and then was stationed in Germany where he served proudly, became sergeant, and was a starter for the regiment football team playing offensive end.  He often said the “good ole days” about his time in the Army.  After his honorable discharge, he went to work for Neuendorf Transportation Company and delivered freight for 40 years.

Roger met the love of his life, Hilma Astrid Anderson while she was attending nursing school here in Marshfield, and they were married on September 10^th, 1955 in Duluth MN.  They were blessed with 61 years of marriage and two wonderful sons, Jeff and David.  Roger and Hilma made their home in Marshfield their entire life.  Roger was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 54, VFW, Eagles Club, and the Brown-Haired Monarchs Hunting Club. In his early years, he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, bowling, softball, horseshoe pitching, hunting, fishing, camping, card playing, and square dancing.

Some of his best memories are of deer hunting on Peterson Road, and camping and fishing on the Willow Flowage.

Roger LOVED and supported all Marshfield sports and always had something to “say” about the coaching or the referees after each game ….good or bad.  He always enjoyed yearly fundraising for the American Legion baseball team and looked forward to the baseball bonanza banquet.

Roger loved gardening and appreciated all the harvesting he and Hilma would do.  He was very proud of the sunflowers he’d grow and watch the birds enjoy the seeds and the many feeders he had out during the winter months.

He, Hilma, and their dog Buddy enjoyed traveling throughout the states during their retirement years.  They spent their summers in the Northwoods enjoying leisure times with all their friends at the Terrace View campground.   Every now and then Roger and his longtime Marshfield neighbor, Bob Schmidt, would pull a cork on Sundays after church which relieved all their stress as they called it.  Roger always had a sense of humor and was a kind man.  He was a dedicated Marshfield Tiger, Brewers, Packers, and Badger fan, he would stay up all night watching games.

Roger lived in assistant living the last four years and loved having his family and friends visit him and would always say goodbye with a knuckle bump.

Roger is survived by his son Jeff (Ann) Serchen of Chili, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Serchen of Marshfield.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Beau Serchen, (Bryant); Brant (Shannon) Serchen, (Olivia); Craig Serchen; Emily Serchen; Jason (Jody) Jennerman, (Austin and Abby); Cliff (Peggy) Jennerman, (Danica and Conner).

Roger was preceded in death by his wife and (best friend) Hilma, his son David, a sister Jean, and two brothers, Don and Jack, and his parents.

Rest in peace dad, your body has worn out and your earthly life is over.  Hilma and David are waiting for you.  We love you and thank you for everything you did for us all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Erickson, everyone at Heartland Hospice staff, the VA healthcare system, and the Aster House staff, for all their support and care.

Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic, a private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Marshfield. Rev. Daniel Schoessow will officiate and military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
