Grace Jeannette Ort, 86, passed away on September 5th, 2021 at Copperleaf in Marathon, Wisconsin.

Grace was born on November 23rd, 1934, to Florence (Bessa) and Walter Huven, Sr. in Monico, Wisconsin. She attended Three Lakes High School and was a member of the class of 1952. She married Ralph (Dan) Ort on March 13th, 1952 at Saint James Catholic Church in Monico.

Grace was a hard worker all her life. She was particularly proud of her time spent teaching Sunday school and of her work establishing the local chapter of the organization now known as The Arc, a national advocacy organization for adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Together with her son, Kirk, she owned and operated Club Monico/Ort’s Bar from 1972-1982, and she worked several bookkeeping jobs in Rhinelander and Marshfield over the years. She and her husband grew and sold Christmas trees in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for over 50 years.

Grace loved knitting, baking, dancing, driving, and hosting Halloween parties for her grandchildren. She was a talented cook and a dedicated genealogist, compiling an extensive family history and maintaining correspondence with distant relatives in Germany. She took pride and joy in knitting christening gowns for her granddaughters and hundreds of afghans as wedding and baby gifts for friends and family. She was an active member of Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Marshfield for more than 30 years.

In her golden years, Grace moved to Arizona and had the opportunity to discover her passion for travelling, venturing to the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Chicago, and New York City. She also loved the chance to go out dancing several times a week with her sister-in-law and good friend Karen and to attend live theater with her daughter and son-in-law.

Grace is survived by her beloved dog Tiny Toes; daughter Lisa (Jack) and sons Mark, Kirk (Betty), and Bradley (Carrie); grand-children Stephane (Keith), Stacie (Erick), Chelsea (Steve), Josh (Jessie), Jason (Joanna), Bradley, Danielle, Amanda (Dan), Mariah (Aaron), and Maeve (Jordan); three step-grandchildren Laura (Paul), Kurt, and Leslie (Tony); 14 great-grandchildren; friend and sister-in-law Karen Horsley; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph, son Craig, “like a son” Tim Schneider, her parents, brothers Walter and Robert, and lifelong friend Trink Kincaid.
Special thanks to the amazing staff at Copperleaf in Marathon for their compassionate care of Grace. Through their dedicated commitment over the past 19 months, they truly became part of her family.
