Newman Catholic Battles Top Opponents at DC Everest Invite

Newman Volleyball competed at the Everest Varsity Volleyball Invite on Saturday 9/3.  There were a total of ten teams that participated including Newman Catholic and the host Evergreens along with EauClaire Memorial, Edgar, Menomonie, Merrill, Stevens Point, Three Lakes, Tomahawk and Wausau East.
Each team played four matches beginning at 9AM.
Newman Catholic started with Three Lakes winning 2 sets to 0 with scores of 25/10 & 25/19
Next up for the Cards was Tomahawk and after a tightly fought battle the Hatchets came out on top. Newman lost 1 set to 2. Set scores were 25/14, 23/25 & 14/16
After intermission the Cardinals played another worthy opponent, Eau Claire Memorial.  They battled hard but came up short again in a 3 set contest.  Set scores were 25/22, 21,25 & 9/15
The Lady Cards last match of the day was against Menomonie.  They dug deep and won both sets against some tough play with long volleys.  Scores were 27/25 & 25/21
Stat leaders for the tournament were:
Kills: Paige Guld with 25 and Lily Shields with 21
Set Assists: Paige Guld with 40 and Lily Shields with 30
Digs: Grace Carlson with 46 and Paige Reeves with 30
Service Aces:  Grace Carlson had 6 aces and Lily Shields, Annika Svennes and Ashley Jankowski all chipped in 5 a piece.
Our top hitting % was Annika Svennes .295% and Paige Guld had a .228%
Great competition that gave the players all an opportunity to improve each match. They played composed, competitive and kept getting more confident through out the day.
