Names Released in Arpin Shooting

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been investigating an officer involved death (OID) in the village of Arpin, Wis. on the evening of Tuesday, June 11, 2019.

Wood County Sheriff Deputies responded to a welfare check at a residence on State Highway 186 in Arpin, Wis. While conducting an evaluation of the subject, the subject ran back into the residence and obtained a knife.

A struggle ensued and the subject was shot by law enforcement, Wood County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan Dean, 6 years of service with the sheriff’s office. Authorities performed lifesaving measures but subject, 32 year-old Logan O. Johnsrud of Marshfield, succumbed to injuries on scene.

Wood County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Leigh, 16 years of service with the sheriff’s office, was shot during the incident. The deputy was transported to a local hospital, treated, and released.

An additional civilian was injured during the incident, transported to a hospital, and treated.

DCI is leading this investigation, and is assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol and Wisconsin State Crime Lab. The following agencies provided on-scene support: Grand Rapids Police Department, Marshfield Police Department, Nekoosa Police Department, Pittsville Police Department, Port Edwards Police Department, and Wisconsin Rapids Police. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of Crime Victim Services is providing services to the family of the deceased. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
