Medford (OnFocus) – The Medford Cross Country Team is represented well at the WIAA State Cross Country Meet, with the girls qualifying as a team and two boys, Joe Sullivan and Tanner Hraby earning the trip.

We caught up with Medford Head Cross Country Coach Kevin Wellman to learn more about the Raiders’ trip to state.

1.  What have been the keys for your athletes and team’s successful journey to state?
Working as a team.  They have individual goals but by working together we can achieve great things.  They are probably the closest, happiest and funniest team I’ve ever had.  They want to do well but they want to see each other do well even more.
2. How are you approaching practice this week as you prepare for the state meet?
This week is easy number one, no one gets injured.  Number two keep running but keep in light.  Number three have fun, we have done some team challenges that involve relay races and competitions and they get a lot of fun out of it.
3.  How has fan support been important for your team’s runners this year?
Our fans travel so well.  The parents obviously cheer loudly for their kid but also for everyone else’s kid.  It is a great thing to see.  I feel like I’m a part of a large extended family.
4. What do you see as the keys to be successful at The Ridges on Saturday?
We just need to be relaxed.  I’ll save all my best Dad jokes for Saturday and I’ll tell them some funny stories.  If you are laughing you are not worried and stressed.  I will encourage the kids to just take it all in and live in the moment.  If we make the podium or finish 16th it will not affect my pride in this team.
