Marshfield Senior Legion baseball sweeps doubleheader from D.C. Everest

MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Post 54 Senior American Legion baseball team was able to get back on the winning track in Wisconsin Valley Legion League play with a doubleheader sweep of D.C. Everest on Monday night at Jack Hackman Field.

Marshfield won 3-0 and 5-2 to improve its record to 7-11 overall and 4-5 in WVLL play.

Chandler Schmidt, who was pivotal in the Stratford High School team’s Division 3 state championship at the WIAA State Tournament in mid-June, made his season debut for the Blue Devils and was spectacular on the mound in Game 1.

The right-hander tossed a complete-game five-hit shutout to earn the win for Marshfield, striking out seven without a walk. He needed 91 pitches to blow through the D.C. Everest lineup, allowing just five singles in the game.

Marshfield scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings to provide enough offense. Preston Wagner led Marshfield, going 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Jacob Earll had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Marshfield scored two runs in both the first and second innings of Game 2 and was able to hold on from there.

Logan Schreiner pitched five strong innings for the Blue Devils, allowing two runs, and Ty Pankratz threw a scoreless sixth to earn the save. The game was called after 5½ innings due to rain.

Riley Boushack led off the first with a triple and scored on a passed ball to give Marshfield the early lead.

Devyn Palmer later reached on an error and scored on a single by Ben Gust, making the lead 2-0.

Marshfield pushed it to 4-0 in the second when Jaeger Johnson reached on an error and scored on another, and Preston Wagner had a sacrifice fly to plate Monte Diestler.

Wagner had another sac fly in the fourth to score Earll with the Blue Devils’ final run.

Marshfield plays at Wausau on Wednesday.
