The Marshfield Fire and Rescue Department will be commemorating the lives lost that day with some unique events.

The fire station will have 343 American flags on display on the fire station lawn to honor the 343 firefighters that lost their lives that day.

The department is also flying the Freedom Flag under the American flag at the station throughout the month of September.

Depending on the weather, the department also plans to fly a 10′ x 15′ American flag from one of the fire trucks until sunset.

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the fire station will not be open to tours but the public is welcome to stop by and pay tribute to those who died that day.

The department said in a release that they remember the fallen and will not forget what those firefighters gave that day.

“20 years later, we remember,” the department said. “We honor the memory and actions of the fallen. We will never forget.”

According to MFRD, the Freedom Flag was created in remembrance of 9/11. It’s symbolism invokes a solemn remembrance of the events of that day and all of the lives which were lost.

The MFRD said the Freedom Flag is about honoring those who died during the 9/11 tragedy.

“With honor, reverence and respect, we chose to fly the Freedom Flag to ensure that we will never forget those who lost their lives and those who responded heroically on that day,” the department said.
