Wisconsin Rapids (OnFocus) – Three Marshfield Tigers qualified for the Wisconsin State Cross Country Meet on Saturday: Henry Hoernerman, Graham Lonsdale and Eliana Kanitz.

We caught up with Tigers’ Coach Dan Akin to learn more about the Tigers’ trip to state.

  1. What have been the keys for your team’s successful journey to state?
We have some tremendous competitors who took it to the next level at sectionals, all three ran their best times of the season at Sectionals.  Thats what it takes to get to the next level.
2. How are you approaching practice this week as you prepare for the state meet?
Keep up the intensity and slightly lower the mileage.  The Hay is in the Barn as we say.  We have a fun event tomorrow and our team awards and state sendoff tomorrow afternoon.  We have extra kids practice with the qualifiers and that makes a ton of difference.
3.  How has fan support been important for your team’s runners this year?
Yes, our fans and parents have been very supportive and we expect a good turnout on Saturday as the meet is close to Marshfield and the weather looks to be spectacular
4. What do you see as the keys to be successful at The Ridges on Saturday?
Keeping calm in the first part of the race, the entire field wants to do well.  The second half of Ridges is where the race is won and the pretenders fade away.  Most of all:  Enjoy the Experience and reflect on the hard work it took to get there.
