Fire Prevention Campaign Runs through Holiday Season

(OnFocus) Six structure fires have taken place in Wood County since the Keep the Wreath Green fire prevention campaign kicked off this Thanksgiving.

During the campaign, which runs until Dec. 31, fire departments display wreaths outside their station and replace a green bulb with a red one each time there’s a fire. The campaign raises awareness of fire prevention practices in a time of year where there are extra fire hazards, such as candles, live Christmas trees, and holiday cooking.

On Friday, Dec. 6, a fire at a ranch-style home was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m. in the Township of Saratoga. Upon arrival, the fire was coming through the kitchen roof and out of the windows. A family friend rescued the family’s four dogs, but two pet guinea pigs perished. The home was a complete loss.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, flames were reported coming through a garage roof on County HH in the Township of Sherry. The garage was not attached to the house and was a total loss.

On Friday, Dec. 13, a total of 13 fire departments responded to a house fire on Mill Creek Drive reported by a neighbor, which resulted in a total loss of the structure but no injuries.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, Marshfield Fire & Rescue Department responded to an electrical fire in the basement of a local residence. The crew was on scene for an hour and damage was contained to the area of origin.

That same day, the Auburndale Fire Department responded with other rural agencies to Wiskerchen Cheese shortly after 5 p.m. for a fire in a roof cavity. The fire was contained within 20 minutes to a 20×20 foot area. Product and equipment were damaged due to the water used to extinguish the flames.

On Friday, Dec. 20, Vesper Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the Town of Seneca around 4:30 p.m. for reports of a smoke-filled home. While many personal items were saved, the structure was a complete loss and numerous pets died.
