Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) A check presentation for two local nonprofits took place on Wednesday at Business After 5, hosted at the Veterans Memorial Hall.

American Legion Post 54 received $10,000, while $5,000 went to Main Street Marshfield. The funds come from the sponsorship of sixty downtown banners honoring veterans. This is the second year the banners have been placed.

The fundraiser is a valuable source of income for both organizations.

“The funding is important to downtown because that’s an extra chunk of money we can reinvest right back into promoting the downtown businesses, and it’s so great that it’s done in a way that also promotes some of our local heroes,” said Executive Director Kaelie Gomez, Main Street Marshfield.

The five-year program has seen great success and placements for 2020 have already sold out. The Legion has received calls from other places around the state wondering how they can start their own banner program, said Mike Feirer, one of the leaders for the project.

The Legion has used the funds for building renovations such as painting the interior, installing new doors, creating a comfortable lounge, and purchasing a new sound system. Upcoming renovations include putting in a handicap bathroom and laundry room, and creating more storage space.

The Business After 5 event also recognized the 100th anniversaries of the American Legion Post 54, Noon Rotary, The Merkel Company, and Forward Bank.

Festival Foods was one of the main sponsors for the event. “Festival is proud to partner with our veterans at the American Legion and our Marshfield Noon Rotarians to celebrate 100 years of service in the Marshfield Community,” Marty Chy, Store Director.

A walking tour booklet with a map identifying the location of each marker will be available soon at Main Street Marshfield. The banners will remain up until November.
