Marshfield, WI (OnFocus) The opening date of Hefko Pool for the 2020 summer season is currently undecided.

The Parks and Recreation Department has been in talks with other communities on their plans for opening municipal pools, including Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, Weston, Merrill, Rothschild, Schofield, and Thorp.

“It was noted in our discussions that if one pool closes and another pool stays is open, it creates a high probability that community with the pool open will attract more out-of-town residents and increase the spread of the coronavirus to that community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Justin Casperson. “As a result of the discussions, it was decided to take a unified group approach.”

The latest date that Hefko pool could consider opening is July 1, but to accommodate that date Wisconsin would need to reach phase 3 of the state’s Badger Bounce Back plan by June 15. That would allow the parks department time to fill the pool, balance the water chemistry, and train staff.

However, that plan may change in light of recent events.

“With the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturning Emergency Order #12 ‘Safer at Home,’ and little follow-up direction from state legislators on re-opening public facilities and activities, we will do our best to adhere to federal, state and local guidelines and recommendations or until further guidance is provided,” Casperson said. “We have been monitoring and communicating with national, state and local health agencies, peer groups and associations as to their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Deciding on a plan for opening the pool is a challenge in light of the evolving requirements.

“Each day things change, and each day we have to react to that change. At this time, it is uncertain as to when or if Hefko or any of our facilities will open for the season,” Casperson said. “We are trying to stay positive, focused on things we can control and provide leisure activities for the residents of Marshfield. The health and safety of the community is extremely important to us. Their cooperation, patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.”
